After selling the Disco in November, I'm looking for something fairly priced and tidy to fill up its main role in my life; comfortable hauler for medium to long trips. I'm thinking of about £5k max, but I'm really struggling to make a sound decision. The two LandRovers take up all of my tinker time, so I needa no breakey. So obviously I'm looking at an Alfa.

Fix me Oppo, and find me something fun and sensible within 50 miles of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

Within 50 miles of Newcastle probably excludes an AMC Eagle wagon, mores the pity.

Ha! Drug capital of the North East. How's the motor? My gmail is locked out :/

I second the Alfa actually, lovely cars. Also hello fellow geordie.

They're not even on the Autotrader drop-down menu

You know what? I saw one of your posts with the Panda in your driveway and my immediate thought was: Tyneside! For fear of embarrassing myself I said nothing. Y'alreet

Haha you were right. Moved here for uni a couple years ago. It was a big upgrade from my hometown, which was made most famous for a man pretending to get lost at sea in a canoe.

You can't log back into your email account?

Haha that guy. You're more famous for greeting a monkey off a boat with a hangman's noose and accusing it of being a Frenchman

Wow, we might actually be able to get enough people together to have a north east oppo meetup. Three's a crowd!

Such noble things to be known for... I believe at one point we had the highest teen pregnancy rate in Europe too.

Yeah might be possible one day, most of the UK oppos live down south it seems or we could get quite the gathering.

Sort of. I'm getting error messages or refresh loops on all devices when trying to log in under my personal account and can't access recovery options. The big G are on the case apparently.

Yay North East! We're good at obesity too. Whereabouts are you? Schaefft is in Gateshead and myself in Wylam.

Ah, I was wondering why I suddenly didn't any replies anymore. :p I'll send you my mail to your other address, you should have it in 5min.

I'm only a mile or two out from the centre, have to live reasonably close to uni.

My guess was Heaton (and this is going to sound really really anal) based on the brickwork in your driveway

Just get some new wheels.

Not bad! But tax and mpg might hurt a bit. Bonus marks for spinning all 4 wheels though. B+

And "only" 50k miles
![]() 12/04/2014 at 17:37 |

In all honesty I'd probably go for something like this. Auto, leather, cool little engine and low-ish mileage.

I love a Saab, but the tax band is ludicrous! £485 a year for a 2.0 is cray cray. The tax and emission rules changed prior to this age of vehicle so maybe a older one?
![]() 12/04/2014 at 17:43 |
|
Perhaps, I'm unfamiliar with tax on cars in Britain, I assumed smaller displacement engines meant less tax, but surely there is a lot more to it for the Saab to be that expensive.
![]() 12/04/2014 at 17:48 |

Emissions regulations. Tax £ is based on grams of CO2 produced per kilometer. It sort of works I guess, if you're a namby pamby eco-centric hairy vagina'd bra burning hippy with a Nissan Leaf which indirectly consumes fossil fuels and directly consumes finite Lithium. It doesn't work when I can't buy cool cars.
![]() 12/04/2014 at 17:48 |

also; thank you for actually looking around for me :)
![]() 12/04/2014 at 17:51 |
|
Ah that's interesting (in a bad way), politicians here probably don't even know what CO2 is. When considering older vehicles, in what year were the new regulations enforced?
![]() 12/04/2014 at 17:58 |

Based on vehicle registration date.

If that Saab was made post 2010 it would cost £860.00 just for road tax :/

Nah, don't mention it. It's alway nice to help ;)

Apparently I'd have pay £1,090 for my Subaru. Yikes

Applied some new filters to my search (I ignored all the Lagunas and Mondeos, but I actually quite like the new Laguna)

Saab's out, I hate that body style. Saab had lost it by that point. The Audi though, I must've missed it. High miles but looks fairly clean. A very probable contender.
I'd love a big dirty French diesel, preferably Citroen (NOT the previous to your gen C5, what a POS) or a big Peugeot. I'm slightly swamped for not narrowing down what I want. Should I just say reliable, economical, diesel wagon?
![]() 12/04/2014 at 18:59 |

There were a couple of 407s SW (a car I nearly got myself) with lowish miles and there was an A6 but tax was a bit too much. If you want to haul stuff that's probably the best bet, but go for something with a bit of character.
![]() 12/04/2014 at 19:17 |
|
I totally agree. If not character then at least some fun! Thanks for all your help, I've actually got something to think on now.

That's ok, I love car searching, keep us updated! I wasn't going to tell you but from all the cars available on auto trader under 5k and near you my favorite was a Disco 2.
![]() 12/04/2014 at 20:59 |

Hahaha NO! Admittedly I'd love one because I've never had one before. But so many reasons not to.
Pick one:
-I already have too much Lucas in my life.
-My girlfriend would double kill me.
-3 Land Rovers and an Alfa. Pot luck as to which one will start on a cold morning.
Also, this was me and a friend just last week;

I would literally end another human's life to own a 159 wagon....or a Brera....
![]() 12/06/2014 at 10:42 |

If you want big, comfy, reliable, makes a godawfully fantastic noise, moddable to hell and back, and still gets good highway gas mileage...
You're best off embracing the most American car in existence.

Goddamnit I love it, but I think I'll struggle to get one over here!
